Do you need local visibility or a wider audience?

Use your actual service area to plan work on Maps, business information and ordinary web search.

Local search helps people find nearby businesses. Wider web searches may not depend on how close a customer is to you. Start by checking where your customers are.

The basics to remember

  • Google Maps and local business results mainly consider relevance, distance and prominence: how well the business matches the need, how far away it is and how well known it is.
  • Businesses with a limited service area should first get their profile, hours, address or service area right. Businesses serving a wider audience also need pages that answer those customers’ questions.
  • You can do both. This is a practical division based on your business, not two fixed packages defined by Google.

See Google: Local ranking and Google: Guidelines for representing your business .

The same service can have different names in different places

Research the actual region and local language together. People in different cities may describe the same repair differently. When offering remote services in other countries, changing the country filter while keeping an English keyword does not establish local demand. Ask someone familiar with the language to check expressions, then review local search results and real enquiries.

A competitor’s visits from certain countries are research clues, not evidence that you can serve or win orders there. Check your capabilities, language and customer needs before adding regional explanations or translations. Do not invent locations or repeatedly swap city names to make the site appear to cover more places. See Google: Multi-regional and multilingual sites and Google: Doorway abuse .

Walk through an example

Check Before (hypothetical) After or appropriate action
Repair shop making home visits Wants to cover every city Explain the real service area first
Nationwide remote service Watches only Maps rankings Check answers for remote customers
Both kinds of service One vague introduction Explain each service method

Suppose a repair shop only makes visits within its city. Explain that coverage first, rather than producing dozens of city pages for places it cannot serve.

Common misunderstandings

Listing more cities does not move your business closer to customers. Nobody can pay for a better Google local ranking.
