When does structured data help a small business?

Describe real information with machine-readable labels without confusing markup with guaranteed search features.

Structured data labels page information in an agreed format. It can tell a program “these are opening hours” or “this is the business address.” It supplements existing content.

The basics to remember

  • Schema.org is a common vocabulary of labels: shared names for information across websites. Choose types based on actual page content and features Google supports.
  • Labels must be accurate and match what customers can see. Do not add invented reviews, hidden content or unrelated information for search display.
  • Rich results add features beyond an ordinary text result. Correct markup is only part of eligibility for some features; Google does not guarantee their appearance.

See Google: Introduction to structured data and Google: Structured data policies .

Organize visible information before choosing markup

Put useful questions, comparison tables, images and business details on the visible page first. Add relevant markup only when supported Google features and conditions apply. Questions or ratings on a page do not automatically produce matching search features.

JSON-LD is a common way to write structured data. A developer places agreed fields in a page’s script tag to explain what information represents. Owners need not write the code, but should check names, images, addresses and other fields against the page, and request official-tool testing. See Google: Introduction to structured data .

Walk through an example

Check Before (hypothetical) After or appropriate action
Visible hours Monday to Friday Markup describes the same hours
Visible address Actual business location Markup uses that address
Test result Format errors Repair and test again

Suppose the business changes its hours. Update the visible text, update the structured data, then use Google’s Rich Results Test. The two descriptions must not disagree.

Common misunderstandings

Structured data is not an automatic ranking boost or a replacement for the body. Do not force the same type onto every page.
